BLOWERS

Toyota Racing Development showed off its supercharger for the Toyota Matrix XR and Pontiac Vibe. Based on the ever-popular Eaton roots-type blower, this one increases horsepower by 23 percent, from 140 to 172 with 7.5 pounds of boost. TRD added an extra fuel injector upstream of the supercharger that also cools the charge by 15 degrees. It’ll also fit on Corollas with the 1ZZFE engine and on the Celica, but you can’t close the hood.

Bruhahahhah finally!!!!!

I'm sorry, but cutting a whole in your hood is a small price to pay for a supercharger....

I'm assuming that's on stock parts. Not using cai and bigger exhaust. Forced injection responds VERY NICELY to those mods!!!

Mark, do you want to share one?:

hmmm... my GT-S with 180HP stock will still be cheaper than a GT with SC. Plus my gas mileage won't plumate :D

Actually no. I didn't even bother test driving a GT. The first time I test drove the GT-S when it first came out, I fell in love with the car and it's lift. It was absolutely crazy for me at the time  2 years later I finally got me one :D I still can't get enough of hitting lift, it's like an addiction

Keep in mind brent that the gt is 7 g's cheaper than a gts, and I'm pretty sure a supercharged gt will destroy a gts. More linear power curve. Of course, it's all subjective. Mark will have his SC in 3 weeks :)

7Gs!!! not for me :D
I thought that a bare bones GT was approx 26G and a bare bones GT-S was 30G.

I think the race between a SC GT and a NA GT-S would be close, but definetely not a destroy in anyway. The linear power band is only useful while racing from the standing start in first gear, after that it has no advantage.

from the toyota site :

GT Manual Transmission $24,645
GTS Manual Transmission $33,245

Sorry my bad, it's closer to 10!

Yeah, you may be right. Let's get mark to get one and find out!

How much is that SC going for? 5k, 6k, more....

hmm... at one point you could get a GT-S for 29 or 30k, this did not include leather or sunroof. I think the TRD GT-S is actually cheaper as well. As well you get much more than just another 40HP with the car. Tires, Wheels, alloy spare, ABS, discs brakes all round, prem stereo, leather, sunroof, GT-S badge of course

At any rate it always blows my mind that you pay thousands more for a different 4cyl that pumps out only 40 more HP. If you compare that to buying a domestic, you can usually upgrade a V6 to V8 for a few hundred more.

Then again a V6 in the celi would suck ass

Very good points all the way around Brent..

BUT there are several other things to consiter..

1) Insurance.. Do you actualy HAVE to let your insurance company know you have a Supercharger? The insurance differnce between the GTS and the GT is pretty substantial (although not QUITE enought to act as a justificaiton..)

2) I would LOVE to get a 2003 GTS.. But I'll loose more on the trade-in then the SC is worth.. Ergo.. :D

But apart from that you are RIGHT on the money. The GTS is a nicer car, and the upgrades you pay for are FUNCTIONAL not just purdy.. (ie Disk Breaks are more durable then Drum Breaks, 17" Rims handle better, etc..).

BUT. The GT is 'way' cheaper on gas, and cheaper on Insurance..

As to your last comment.... Hummmm.... Is the LS300 4cyl or 6.. :D

... or how 'bout that Tundra engine. A shoe horn and a tub of vasline I'm sure we could get it to fit!!

The only things I miss are the discs and the hp 40 of course!

I think this was toyota's big mistake. It's a pretty big price gap between the gt and the gts. You're right, it's still a 4 banger, and american upgrades usually only cost a couple of hunny, but you know what? I see just as many gts's as gt's. So I guess they know their demographic. It's really too bad the gts didn't include the trd suspension or something...

The bottom line, is I got the gt cause I couldn't afford the gts, and now that the supercharge is out, I can pretend to justify the decision. In reality, I really doubt anyone is actually going to go through all the hassle to buy and install that thing for only 23% more hp. Those really aren't mega gains for 7000g's.

so, trd dropped the ball yet again.

congrats trd. you guys rule.
