QUEBEC, May 21 /CNW/ - Toyota Canada Inc. (TCI) today presented the CAA-Québec with an environmentally friendly Prius hybrid sedan. CAA-Québec, an affiliate of the Canadian Automobile Association (CAA) serving members in the province of Québec, will use the electric/gasoline hybrid vehicle as part of a program to educate consumers about the benefits of hybrid technology and the use of environmentally friendly vehicles.
On hand for the presentation were Pierre Beaudoin, Senior Manager,
Technical Services of CAA-Québec and Réjean Duquette, Consultant, Vehicle Sales of TCI's Québec Zone. "Toyota is proud to partner with CAA-Québec in showing consumers that they can use less fuel and significantly reduce pollution without changing the way they live," said Ken Tomikawa, President of TCI. "One of the most common misconceptions about alternate automotive technologies is that they are expensive and complicated to operate. That is just not true because Prius is easy to own, easy to maintain, and easy on the environment."
Prius, the world's first mass produced electric/gasoline hybrid
automobile, is powered by the sophisticated Toyota Hybrid System (THS). This system combines a gasoline engine and an electric motor in a high-efficiency, low-emission powertrain that monitors itself continuously to ensure that it is operating in the most energy efficient, least polluting mode.
A 4-door, 5-passenger family car, Prius reduces fuel consumption by up to
half, and reduces harmful emissions, such as oxides of nitrogen, by nearly 90 per cent compared to conventionally powered engines. It is also the only hybrid vehicle that qualifies for California's strict SULEV (Super Ultra Low Emissions Vehicle) status, a standard that can only be met following stringent in-use certification.
Unlike pure electric vehicles, Prius does not need to be plugged in.
Instead, the Prius battery is charged by the gasoline engine or a unique
onboard regenerative braking system. When the vehicle is braking or coasting, the electric motor becomes a generator, turning energy that would normally be lost into electricity to recharge the batteries. This system is particularly efficient in stop-and-go city driving, making Prius one of the first vehicles to be more efficient in the city than on the highway.
CAA-Quebec is a not-for-profit organization whose mission is to ensure
the safety and peace of mind of its members and customers by providing the best in financial, automotive, travel and home-related products and services.
