The automotive industry may be in a slump, but some canít keep the Hyundai Tiburon in stock - like the vehicleís owners. The 2-door automobile tops the list of the most stolen cars in Canada for the third year in a row. The Acura Integra and another Hyundai car, the Accent, come second and third.

And the Subaru Impreza WRX 4-door isnít far behind. It gets the dubious prize as the car that has the highest theft claim cost per vehicle. The Integra shows up there, too, and so does the Ford F350.

The Insurance Bureau of Canada issues the annual ranking as a warning to consumers who are thinking about buying a new automobile, and as a means to pressure manufacturers to put proper anti-theft devices into their products.

The group believes the message is working. ìHyundai recognized that their products were being targeted by thieves, and responded by including an Ö immobilizer in the Tiburon base and SE models when they redesigned the car for 2003,î points out the Bureauís Henning Norup. ìWe expect that this will be the last year the Tiburon occupies top spot for theft frequency.î

But he adds the Impreza hasnít followed those recommendations. ìOnce it's stolen,î warns Norup, ìit's not likely to be recovered.

The list is complied by comparing the insurance claim records of the most popular models of cars, passenger vans, S.U.V.s and pickup trucks across the country. The Bureau claims auto theft costs consumers $600 million in premiums every year.

I don't think insurance premiums are solely based upon the value of the car being insured. For instance, I believe they look at the individual's driving record, the "profile" or "average" driver of a certain type of vehicle, and other factors to determine the likelihood of that car/driver combination being in a claim-requiring incident - e.g. accident, incident causing harm to others, etc.

E.g. my friend just sold his 2002 Mustang GT, and got a 2002 Corvette - his insurance dropped in price. My belief is that the "profile" of your average Mustang GT driver is younger and more likely to be in an accident, get a ticket, etc. On the other hand, the Corvette is a $70K+ car, and the profile of the person who tends to drive a car of that value is older, more mature, and less likely to be claiming from the insurance company.

Is there a 2001 integra?

Also, I am surprised that no toyotas made it to the list as they do not have the chiped keyes...

I'm surprised about the 3-Series Bimmers...I always thought they were hard to steal...Don't they Anti-Theft Ignition-Chips in the keys??...

Probably have to look at the sheer numbers out there also. Are they saying "Most Stolen" or "Highest Percentage of that Vehicle Stolen"

There are probably more Accent's stolen in Canada in a year than there are Celicas imported to Canada in a year.
