car alarms - specifically the paging devices.
what are your thoughts?
spending $500 or so on a car alarm where it pages you if someone touches your vehicle. if someone wants to steal your car/things from your car, they will take it regardless of how good your alarm is.
that's what i think. is the money just buying piece of mind?
i was once tempted to buy the paging alarms.

I have one of the best alarm/remote starter/paging systems on the market I believe. Anyways not only does it give you piece of mind - BUT if your alarm does start going off at least you will know when your remote starts beeping and you can go to check on it to see if it some jackass is messin' with your ride or if it was just a cat taking the wrong way home.
I also love just pushing one button on my remote to lock/unlock all doors and arm the vehicle rather than fumbling for keys in the dark and chance scratching your paint when you can't find the keyhole.
Plus you get a discount on car insurance having a car security system installed by an authorized dealer.

Your basically buying "peace of mind". If someone really wants to steal your car, they will IMO. But if I were to get an alarm, I would want a pager to notify me, but you know how alarms are prone to false alarms. I'm also not sure about the range either. If you are out of range, you would not receive the page when you car alarm goes off. I don't know, maybe the technology has changed a lot now. I just wouldn't want to see you watching a movie in a theatre and keep running out to see false alarms

i guess that depends on the amount of rage within you ..
if someone was busting into your car would you have the courage to confront them. If so I think its more than peace of mind.

Hey! Why don't you get a GPS system? :P This way, you can still track down you car if they steal it. Not sure how much that would cost though and you might have to pay some fees like monitoring?

isn't boomerang just that?
i think that's what it was called. they would install a hidden cell phone or something in your car. if your car is stolen, they can call it up and track it via gps.

ok i busted my head over this issue last june to aug
the bottom line is they'll stel ur car if they want it
i dunno how high celica theft in ontario is but quebec it aint that bad
ppl dont steal the most expensive cars or the nicest cars, they 'usually' steal the bets sold cars
stolen cars are usually chopped and sold for pieces
civics and integras have high insurance for this reason in QC; they are very popular and thus their parts are highin demand
sorry i went off on a tangent there
i didnt buy a pager alarm
i heard too much controversy about it
get a decent alarm, an expensive one if it makes u feel better, and get it installed by a real good guy
a good alarm installer will hide the sunnovabich somewhere where a thief would not think of looking immediately; a place hard to get to
i got the boom2 cause it lowers my insurance premiums and has a perfect track record to my understanding
a boom wont prevent ur car from gettin stolen, but will make it easy to trace
course what conditon ur car will be in is another story
just b careful where u park
avoid dark alleys etc..
and good luck

couldn't have said it better .. however if it were teens lookin to joy ride of they see a car is armed with an alarm they will most likely move on .. however if someone wants your car for its guts .. then all it takes is someone who knows what they are doing ..

Pythion and Viper are exactly the same, thye only use different colors
kinda like Ford and Mercury u know
what's kinda cool is Viper guarantees your radio
insures up to $1000 if it's stolen
check out the models
each have their own little gimmicks

my dealer (personal friend) gave me the oem alarm for free. few people have told me toyota alarms aren't the greatest...but then again an alarm is an alarm. what do you guys think?
Diesel Dud
03-16-2003, 11:24 PM
it's not always how "good" the alarm is that counts
if toyota always installs its alarm in, say position x, and i work for the toyota dealer u got ur car at, i can kill the alarm on ur car in under 30 sec since i know exactly where it is
if it is put in a strategic location, that is another story
the harder u make it for a thief, the better
if u ever plan on getting a boomerang, get it installed at the boomerang dealer.. they take their time into finding a good place to hide the b!ch
** note - im using the boomerang as an e.g., plz do not mstaken the boom for an alarm system

I got the compustar pager alarm and i love it.
It's great. I also agree with other posts that if they want your car for some reason they'll get it on matter what...unless you have boomerang, i heard that stuffs crazy, it can track your car some distance underground and stuff...I think it's great cause of convience.
I'll just throw out some info to help you decide:
Range is pretty damn far...but once your inside a big building like a mall forget it, it works well in smaller structures like houses or smaller stores.
You can page your car to see the status...ie if you forgot to lock it will tell you.
Autostarter, you can auto start from and see the status on the pager, like how long it's been on, and if it even started.
you can check if other little things are on, like shock sensors, valet mode, etc
you can have it auto arm and disarm when you get within certian distance of the car
you can also program to roll windows down or up.
pages you when the alarm is set off...(all i've had are false alarms where i come running out looking like an idiot...but better safe than sorry, love to catch some punk stealing something stupid like the toyota logo)
i probably won't be able to live without it now
hope that helps

thanks iceman...what's your real name btw?
does this compustar alarm paging system require a monthly paging fee?
Cool_as_Ice
03-17-2003, 10:57 AM
My REAL name is Jon.
The pager runs on an FM frequency so it's kinda like a 2-way radio, so there are no fees...there is supposed to be a satillite version of it but i don't think it's avaliabe in canada (that'd be crazy, and i'm sure would have monthy fees)
i paid about 500 for it installed...but if i have to go back i'd see how much to get it installed by an actual compustar offical dealer
i'm also told you can program other things on it too, i'm gonna see what they can do during the summer, it'd be cool if i could drive with all windows and sunroof open and then have them auto roll shut after i arm it (no i'm not lazy, it'd just look cool!)

For those of you that had an Alarm installed. How much does it save you on your insurance rates?
B-WRX
03-17-2003, 12:03 PM
Depending on the ins company it's any where betweend 5 to 10%
Also, car alarms are tied with comprehensive coverage (I think...anyways, the one that covers fire and theft :P ). So blokes like me, with bare bones insurance (only liability) don't get anything out of having an alarm.

U should see Ben's (Chinos) ITR! IT is a bloody fortress I swear... He has a pager alarm with an immobilizer and all, the Boomerang GPS tracking system, then if you even get into the car he has, the club on the steering wheel and some locking device that prevents u from engaging the clutch...Poor bastard that tries to steal that car man....

I have been debating it as well, but I got no money for mods right now. Insurance and stuff is coming up so now I'm poor again. But I got a price on a Predator alarm (never heard of it) installed for $350.00 cash and that includes an immobilizer. I may wait until next winter or until I do some more mods that will be bait out to put on an alarm.. My old man always says not to bother, thats why we pay insurance, but everyone has there reasons why or why not. Its all for peace of mind I think. But if someone wants to steal the car no device will save it.

nop .. perfect example is my brother .. he was coming out from the Docks and his remote died so the alarm wouldn't disarm, however he obviously has the key so what he did was opened the car .. alarm went off and he popped the hood and he disabled the alarm in a matter of seconds ..
Just need to know what you're doing .. of course my brothers luck there was a cop on the other side of the lot and he got arrested for hot wiring his own car :giggle:

Hey guys, yeah haha its a fortress, but its for peace of mind. I fsomeone wants to steal your car, even if you have it in a forcefield, they will steal it. Alarms only dtere the thief, Nothing really prevents it.
I've got the Copmustar Pager Alarm and its awesome. I'm getting Boomerang hooked up tomorow and its 5 bills for install plus $9.95 for the monitoring fee but its worth it.

well the club and the clutch thing are pretty easy to bypass .. so is a noise maker alarm but the boomerang is cool if it tracks.
