More fun than Solo 2? Maybe, maybe not, that's a matter of personal preference.
What really makes Ice Racing great, is that it's just as cheap as Solo 2. In fact depending what class you run, it's actually ALOT cheaper!
It's the only place you can go for head-to-head, full-contact motor racing on a tiny budget. All you need is a crap car that runs good, and some good tires, and that's it! You're ready to ice race!

Cages are only required for the studded tire class. If you use non-studded tires, then stock belts are fine, and no cage is needed.
I pulled mine up using my dad's truck and my new tow dolley. For anyone who does not have the means to tow their own car, just ask around the other ice racers. Most of them will gladly tow your car for the cost of gas and a case of beer.

Not really. You must remove all exterior lights and plastic body trim. You must have a number board on the roof. You must have a high-mounted brake light and running light. Those are the most important rules you must obey.
For performance mod, the most important thing is tractionized tires. You should also gut out the car. I'd recommend removing any sway bars. Stock suspension is probably the best setup for any car on ice. Engine mods are pointless for 2wd cars because you can't accerate very fast anyways, you're limited by your traction not by your power. For any rwd car, a locked diff is a good idea. For a fwd car an LSD would be better. But in the end, it's just like any other motorsport: "Run wha'cha brung!"

Here's some in-car footage:
I clip the bank, then get passed by a group of 4WD cars

This time I get passed by a heap of RWD cars

Now I hit the bank HARD, then do a cool power slide through the chicane
